This half term we have been working alongside the Department for Education, Sport and Culture and the team from the INEQE Safeguarding group on their newest release 'Safer Schools'. This app has been custom designed to keep parents, pupils and staff members at schools aware and up to date of some of the most current issues that children are finding, in regard to the digital world. The Safer Schools app aims to help the Island’s school communities better protect themselves by having safeguarding information at their fingertips.
Colin Stitt - Safer Schools Team Leader, Ineqe Safeguarding Group said:
‘At Safer Schools, we understand the importance of keeping our young people safer, alongside providing solutions to the various issues facing parents, carers and those responsible for educating and empowering our adults of tomorrow. All content of the Safer Schools app has been tailored to meet the unique requirements of the Isle of Man, based on Isle of Man Government policies.’
Over the last 3 months, I have had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Safer Schools App to receive training and advice on how the Safer Schools app can be most effectively used in our school:
In school, we will be using this app as a key communication tool between the school and our parents/carers and school community. Updates surrounding school life will be pushed as 'notifications' straight to your devices, providing you have the app and have notifications turned on! This feature will be specifically utilised for those messages that we need to get to you quickly! (Sports day, swimming kits, non-uniform days, etc!)
I would personally like to thank the amazing Digital Leaders team for all of their help launching this across the school. This group of five Year 5/6 children have been vital in spreading the message across the school, including delivering a whole school assembly! Keep an eye out for this team expanding in the near future...
The Digital Leaders had the opportunity to meet two key members of staff within the Safer Schools team during the southern schools' cluster launch last month. As part of this, they had a short interview for a training video that Safer Schools are developing for the launch of the app across the UK and Ireland... more to come on that very soon!
